Intel and Advanced Micro Devices’ latest server processors have come in for criticism from Facebook, the social networking company, for failing to deliver on promised performance.
According to Jonathan Heiliger, vice president of technical operations, the latest generations of server processors from companies like Intel and AMD have failed to deliver anticipated performance gains. “The performance gains they’re touting in the press, we’re not seeing in our applications,” he said at the GigaOm’s Structure conference in San Francisco recently.
A massive consumer of servers, Facebook is constantly looking to upgrade its infrastructure as well as minimize power consumption to cut costs.
The hardware industry, too, has failed to deliver servers that are highly power-efficient for companies such as Facebook and Amazon, Heiliger said. “To build servers for companies like Facebook, and Amazon, and other people who are operating fairly homogeneous applications, the servers have to be cheap, and they have to be super power-efficient.”
According to Heilinger, Google, which has designed and built its own servers, has done a good job.
In order to meet the needs of companies deploying large computing clusters, Heiliger said they should come together to develop common standards that vendors can design for.

AMD has launched its six-core opteron server processor, codenamed Istanbul.
Dasaradha Gude, MD of AMD India said, Across a single platform, AMD can address the need for more cores and power-efficient solution with Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors.
But AMD’s celebration may be short-lived as Intel is due to launch its own eight-core Nehalem EX chip in the first quarter of 2010. We cannot compare our product with Intel s despite some similarities since the market segment are applications are different, said Gude.
The six-core AMD Opteron processors leverage existing platforms infrastructure and a low-cost, power efficient DDR-2 memory architecture which can help lower system acquisition costs besides HPC, virtualization and database workloads can benefit from increased 4P STREAM memory bandwidth of up to 60% enabled by HyperTransport technology HT Assist, which helps reduce processor to processor latency and traffic.
The processors are expected to be available from this month from OEMs including HP, IBM, Cray, Dell and Sun Microsystems along with support from motherboard and infrastructure partners. Some of the ISV partners of AMD in India include Citrix, Motorola, Novell, Oracle, Parallets, RedHat, Sun Microsystems, VMware and Xeon.
Besides AMD has also appointed two regional partners like Digital Waves and Wipro. The HE, SE, and EE versions of the six-core AMD Opteron processor are planned for the second half of 2009. Intel and AMD have clashed in past years over performance and price, and squeezing as many cores into a single microprocessor has been one way to boost performance.

Intel has announced SES as its No. 1 partner in India for the Q-4 of 2008. The distribution major has been distributing Intel’s entire range of motherboard and CPU’s across the country. Intel, the innovation giant and SES Technologies, the leading IT distributor have come together to provide best of the technologies and solutions to the Indian market. It is worth mentioning that very recently Intel had announced SES as its number one breadth partner.
“This recognition implies that along with increasing the volumes, we also ensured that the product was reaching every corner of the country through our deep channel network. This is a tremendous achievement and we are confident to achieve the same feat in the next quarter as well,” commented Jacques Roux, Director, SES Technologies.
This acknowledgment by Intel, ascertains the fact that SES Technologies has the experience, knowledge and bandwidth to cater a multinational brand like Intel. SES has a very strong after sales support mechanism in place. With a very strong pool of talented professionals, which includes strong product management team, technically qualified sales team and a group of personnel experts, SES has created a niche for themselves in IT Distribution sector in India.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 8, 2008 - Intel Corporation announced today it has begun shipping Intel® X18-M and X25-M Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives (SSDs) based on multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash technology for laptop and desktop computers. The new high-performing data storage devices give computer buyers a new level of system responsiveness in a lightweight, rugged, low-power package that can replace traditional hard disk drives.
Validated for Intel-based computers, the X18-M is a 1.8-inch drive and the X25-M a 2.5-inch drive, offering several advantages over hard drives including faster overall system response, boot and resume times. With no moving parts, SSDs run cooler and quieter and are a more reliable option than hard drives. In addition, SSDs remove input/output (I/O) performance bottlenecks associated with hard disk drives that help maximize the efficiency of Intel processors, such as the company’s Core™ family of products. For example, lab tests show that the Intel X18-M and X25M increase storage system performance nine times over traditional hard disk drive performance.
“Validated by our rigorous testing and OEM customer feedback, we believe that we have developed an SSD that delivers on the promises of SSD computing,” said Randy Wilhelm, Intel vice president and general manager of the NAND Products Group. “By combining our experience in flash memory design with our processor and computing expertise, we have added advances such as our parallel 10-channel architecture, proprietary controller, firmware and memory management algorithms that address write amplification and wear leveling issues to redefine SSD performance and reliability for computing platforms.”
The Intel X18-M and X25-M Mainstream SATA SSDs are available in 80 gigabyte (GB) capacities, with 160GB versions sampling in the fourth quarter of this year. The 80GB drive achieves up to 250MB per second read speeds, up to 70MB per second write speeds and 85-microsecond read latency for fast performance. The 80GB version is priced at $595 for quantities up to 1,000. These SSDs are available now and end-customer products containing the Intel® High-Performance SATA SSDs are expected to begin shipping in the next few weeks.
The company is also expected to introduce a line of single-level cell (SLC) SSDs for the server, storage and enterprise environments within the next 90 days. Called the Intel® X25-E Extreme SATA Solid-State Drive, these products are designed to maximize the Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS), which equates to higher performance and lower enterprise costs. Since SSDs lower energy consumption, maintenance, cooling and space costs, an SSD-based data center will reduce overall infrastructure costs while increasing performance-per-square-foot by as much as 50x.

Recently Chipmaker Intel Corporation plays the game against Advance Micro Devices (AMD) and paid retailer not to sell PCs using chip made by AMD. This new accusation made by European Union Antitrust Regulators.

The ’statement of objections’ from the European Commission is an expansion of the 2007 charges that Intel gave computer makers rebates to limit their use of AMD chips or avoid them altogether.
According to this, commission is now weighing charges Intel unlawfully swindled with both the wholesale and retail channels in an effort to contain its rivals
Intel lawyer Steve Rodgers stated that “he was disappointed by the new charges, which centered on whether it was lawful or not to issue price discounts. The result will be higher computer prices because it prevents Intel from offering discounts“

Intel was given eight weeks to respond to the charges. It would study them in detail before responding to the Commission in writing.
So it is very surprising that technology giant is following such kind of unethical marketing strategies. There must be a healthy competition in the marketing. I hope in future, we will not hear or read such kind of shameful things again.
