36 lakh applications for 11,000 SBI jobs

Posted by simontoffel on 21st September 2009

Bangalore: The current demand in the job market can be assessed by looking at the number of people vying for jobs at State Bank of India (SBI). Following an advertisement last month by SBI for 11,000 clerical posts, more than 36.11 lakh people have applied for the job, many of them being post-graduates or MBAs.

According to an official close to the development, the factors which are responsible for the response, is the recession and a freeze on recruitments in both the public and private sectors. “This was the first ad after a long time for recruitment to a nationalized bank, and therefore the deluge,” the official said to The Economic Times.

By looking at such a high demand for its jobs, SBI now faces the dilemma of how to conduct exams for such a large number of candidates. “It has been proposed to hold the exams in three phases, on November 8, 15 and 22, in two shifts. This way we can test 12 lakh people every day. The final decision will be taken within a week,” the official said.

The huge number of vacancies came into being on account of new branches being opened, the longtime freeze on new recruitments and retirement of existing employees. Incidentally, of the 36.11 lakh applications, more than half a million are from Maharashtra and of the 11,000 posts, 1,100 are reserved for the Maharashtra circle.

TCS - Hire 25000 People Globally in 2009

Posted by simontoffel on 4th September 2009

Bangalore: In a move that could bring a smile to many faces, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced that it will hire 25,000 people globally in 2009, with 90 percent of them in India alone. Though the number is bigger when compared to the hiring these days, it is less than last year when TCS appointed around 35,000 people.

With this recruitment drive, TCS also plans to expand its presence into the tier-II cities in India. “We will be hiring 25,000 people this year, which means roughly 25 lakh square feet of work space required and, therefore, we need to grow outside the metros. Tier-II cities are our only focus for expansion in the country as the top rung are clogged and saturated,” said Tanmoy Chakrabarty, Vice-President and Head of Government Industry Solutions unit at TCS.

Following this hiring spree, the total global manpower of TCS would go up to more than 1.8 lakh. This will put the IT services provider among large private Indian employers like Tata Steel, which has the total employee strength of two lakh. Going forward, the company, which has an estimated 32 percent market share, plans to cash in on the Indian government’s plan to invest Rs. 40,000 crore on IT services.

Currently, 70 percent of the IT segment’s revenue is from India, while the rest comes from the U.S., Latin America, Africa and South East Asian countries. However, the revenue contribution from Indian government businesses to the total company revenue of $6 billion is less than five percent, which the company intends to increase to more than 10 percent in the next three years.

Indian Employees High on Confidence, Says Survey

Posted by simontoffel on 17th August 2009

A survey has placed India ahead of countries like the United States and UK when it comes to employee confidence in Q2′09. Indian employees showed a confidence growth of 8.1% for the survey period.

The global survey was conducted by Kenexa, a business solutions provider. The general trend seen is that countries around the world are becoming more positive as the clouds of the global recession begin to fade away. An exception was Japan which had the lowest confidence index of 93.8%.

What had been the lowest scoring component of confidence — job security and a promising future, has now been replaced by a worker’s ability to find employment elsewhere, illustrating that the notion of a jobless recovery is very much in alignment with how the typical employee feels.

H1N1 expenses to be covered under insurance

Posted by simontoffel on 17th August 2009

Bangalore: Those who test positive for H1N1 - that is causing panic around the nation - can now claim expenses of the treatment, as per their insurance policy. This respite comes following the directive by the Maharashtra government to the private hospitals for treating patients affected by H1N1.

According to The Economic Times, the insurance companies have assured that they will pay for the expensive swab tests as well. These tests costs almost Rs. 10,000 per patient. Narayan Shejawale, Divisional Manager for New India Assurance Company in Pune, said the money spent by a H1N1 patient will be entitled to reimbursement under the Mediclaim scheme. “The only pre-requisite is that the policy needs to be taken out at least 30 days prior to the patient’s hospitalization,” Shejawale added.

The patient’s admission to the hospital would be not be charged, although the insurance claim for the fee paid for the swab test will be settled retrospectively, within 30 days of filing the claim, Shejawale said. He also clarified that patients can prefer a claim, whether he is covered individually or under a group medical insurance plan.

IP addresses of Websites will be exhausted by 2011-12

Posted by simontoffel on 6th August 2009

IPv4, the current version of IP addresses allotted to Websites will be exhausted by 2011-12. The alternate system IPv6 deployment remains below 1% globally and near-zero in India.

It is in emerging economies where the IP address crunch will be felt, said PK Saji, VP (global infra operations) of Sify. Around 67% of the world s IP addresses have been allocated to the US, 17% to the UK and 9% to Asia. But, it is in Asia that the demand for IP addresses has grown rapidly over the past year, he added.

Besides research networks, Sify has converted its systems to IPv6 in India. The Web clients, servers and internet service providers (ISPs) would prefer deployment of alternate technologies to circumvent the addressing problem than attempt a complete overhaul of standards, said Verisign India VP Shekhar Kirani.
