UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)
Announces INDIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM as the BEST National Anthem in the World.

The story is currently circulating via email, and has also been posted to many blogs and forums, especially those that target an Indian audience.
However, I could not find any evidence whatsoever that confirms the rather fanciful claim in the message. There is nothing about such an announcement on the UNESCO website, nor are there any credible news reports that back up the claim in any way. If such an announcement was true, it seems very likely that it would have been widely reported - and one would suspect, hotly debated - in media outlets both in India and around the world.
Thus, it seems apparent that the story is no more than another pointless Internet rumour with no basis in fact.
As its name suggests, UNESCO conducts very important work on an international scale in the spheres of education, science and culture. Therefore, it seems extremely unlikely that UNESCO would waste its valuable time and resources on the rather frivolous, and ultimately meaningless, exercise of nominating the world’s best national anthem.
And, in any case, even if an organization did choose a particular country’s anthem as the best in the world, it is doubtful that the choice would be given much credence by nations other than the supposed “winner”. Just how “good” a particular national anthem might be considered is an extremely subjective matter. Quite understandably, patriots in many nations are apt to view their own anthem as “the best” and are unlikely to be swayed from this opinion by even an organization as prestigious as UNESCO.

Washington: The World Bank Wednesday said it spent a record $58.8 billion on loans, grants, guarantees and social projects over the last year to help poor countries steer through a dramatic global recession.
The development bank said its budget jumped 54 percent between July 2008 and June 30 from a year earlier and is now at the highest level in its 60-year history.
The money keeps developing countries from cutting back on social programmes, and World Bank President Robert Zoellick said he expected the demand to remain high as the economic crisis continues through 2010.
“The pace of recovery is far from certain,” Zoellick said. “Millions of people are still suffering, and we must continue to help countries safeguard priority expenditures.”

Bangalore: In move to reduce the burden on their clients due to recession, IT majors are cutting down on their billing rates by almost 35-40 percent. According to analysts, the billing rates have touched the lowest ever rates at $16 per hour and they predict that this will continue till first quarter of 2010.
Avinash Vashisth, Chairman and CEO, Tholons, an offshore advisory firm says, “Last month has seen unprecedented cut in billing rates even for existing customers.” According to Vashisth, large testing services, and of services of similar value, $16-20 is the prevalent rate. These rates are almost 30-35 percent lower than the rates being charged earlier this year and steeper than the 20 percent cut that British Telecom had demanded from Infosys and Tech Mahindra earlier this year on some old and new projects. Also higher-end projects like SAP have faced pricing cuts of around 25 percent, which is again more than what it was earlier this year.
According to The Economic Times, top IT firms are offering such rates in the form of introductory discounts for new clients, and for a year or two for existing clients. Another worrying factor for the IT firms is that despite the rate cuts, there has not been a corresponding rise in the volume of deal flow, in either highervalue or the lower end services.
Diptarup Chakraborti, Principal Analyst at Gartner, says that he does not see the situation improving before Q1 or Q2 next year. “Good old days are not coming this year for sure,” Chakraborti said. A Gartner study says prices of IT services in outsourcing are anticipated to shrink well up to 2010 due to an uncertain economic climate, IT budget constraints and general market consciousness.

Bangalore: After a year of carnage in the global banking industry, five Indian banks figured in the list of the world’s top 1,000 banks in 2009, compiled by trade magazine ‘The Banker’. State-owned State Bank of India holds the first position among the Indian banks and ranked 64th position and ICICI bank ranked 81st among global banks.
The top five banks in the world are JP Morgan Chase followed by Bank of America, CITI Group, Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC Holdings by capital strength. Among all these five banks, HSBC is the only bank that has not received any government support.
The other Indian banks in the global first 500 league are Punjab National bank, HDFC Bank and Bank of India at 239, 242 and 263, respectively.
The rankings are based on nine parameters-the strength of their Tier I capital, the size of their assets, their capital adequacy ratio, pre-tax profit, growth in profit and five performance indicators (profits on average capital, return on assets, cost income ratio, Basle capital ratio and percentage of non-performing loans).
‘The Banker’, a part of the Financial Times group has been carrying the rankings since 1970. According to publication, banks that stuck to the basics, taking deposits and lending in their home markets fared the best.
“In future banks will be run much more conservatively. Regulators will require them to hold more capitals and be less leveraged which will reduce the profits of the industry as a whole but will bring about a safer banking system,” said Brian Caplen, Editor, The Banker.
